Sandgate Bowls Club embrace Commonwealth Games Spirit

07 Apr 2018

Members and supporters of the Sandgate Bowls Club spent this week cheering on the Australian Lawn Bowls Team playing at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, in the lead up to their very own ‘Corporate Challenge’ on April 18.

Member for Sandgate, Stirling Hinchliffe, joined in on the excitement alongside some of the Corporate Challenge teams as they prepare to go head to head in a night of what is set to be competitive but fun lawn bowls.

Mr Hinchliffe, a sponsor of the event, said holding the Corporate Challenge just after the Commonwealth Games gave the event a unique edge, and urged local businesses and community groups to embrace this opportunity.

“This is a great time to capitalise on the excitement of the Games and promoting the Sandgate Bowls Club’s ongoing connection with the community,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“Having played in several similar events held by the Club, I can say from experience that initiatives like the Corporate Challenge build connections and friendships that last far beyond the game.”

Mens President of the Sandgate Bowls Club, Barry Hall, said it was inspiring to see the Australian Commonwealth Games Team consisting of some 17 bowlers boasting a mix of both youth and experience. He hopes this will encourage more locals to take up bowls as a way to socialise while keeping fit.

“Lawn bowlers can often appear to be calm and composed, but the aim and technique needed to get closest to the jack means that often the sport can be anything but calm and composed, but at the end of the day, it is all good fun,” Mr Hall said.

Ladies President of the Sandgate Bowls Club, Angela Baker, said that she was excited to see an increasing interest in events like the Corporate Challenge.

“We are looking forward to bringing together a wide variety of people across different backgrounds and ages at the Corporate Challenge,” Ms Baker said.
The Sandgate Bowls Club invites all corporate and club supporters to participate in the one-night Corporate Challenge which kicks off at 6:00pm on Wednesday, 18 April, at the Sandgate Bowls Club (Burnett Place, Sandgate).
