Palaszczuk Government Grant to Enhance Female Facilities Now Open

14 Oct 2017

Member for Sandgate, Stirling Hinchliffe, is backing the Palaszczuk Government’s goal of tackling inequality by creating more sporting opportunities for women through its Female Facilities grant now available to local sporting clubs.

Mr Hinchliffe said he welcomed the new, $15 million programme as part of the Queensland Government’s successful ‘Get in the Game’ initiative to help support local clubs involve more girls in non-traditional sports.

“The Female Facilities Programme is an exciting new fund to support the construction of female amenities at sporting clubs in our community and right across Queensland,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“Many clubs across the state were built in an entirely different era, when far fewer women and girls played club sport or participated in active recreation, if at all.

“Times have changed and more women are getting involved with team sport but are forced to use the same change rooms and bathrooms as the male players.

“The Female Facilities Programme aims to address this identified need for dedicated female amenities so that we can encourage more women and girls to get involved in sport and active recreation."

“The Female Facilities Programme aims to address this identified need for dedicated female amenities so that women playing sport can do so with dignity.”

Director of Football at the Sandgate Hawks AFL Club, Mr Chris Ferguson, said that he was excited the Queensland Government is actively promoted women and girls in non-traditional sports.

“It is terrific to see the Queensland Government further encouraging clubs like ours to enhance opportunities for women and girls in sports such as AFL.”

Mr Hinchliffe said that he was pleased the grant was in place to address an issue which had been raised with him by local clubs, including the Hawks, Brighton Bulldogs and Gators Cricket Club.
