Local members of the Queenslanders with Disability Network (QDN) have joined forces to create a new support group to connect people with disability living in Fitzgibbon and surrounding areas.
Member for Sandgate, Stirling Hinchliffe, joined QDN members at the Fitzgibbon community centre to see first-hand how the group will use the Fitzgibbon Community Centre to enhance the opportunities for locals living with disability.
“The Fitzgibbon Community Centre is a fantastic venue, and I’m delighted it will help bring together people in our community living with a disability.”
“This space will allow members of the group to share information on what is available in and around the Fitzgibbon community and to discuss further how the rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will take place,” Mr Hinchliffe said.
Members of the Fitzgibbon support group said that they were looking forward to growing the group, while sharing information for those who live with disability. “People with disability are an important part of the community and have a lot to offer,” said Group Co-Convenor, Meriel Stanger.
“I have lived in this area for quite a long time and it’s good that something like this is finally happening. Something for people with a disability, run by people with disability, with people with disability setting the agenda,” said Group Co-Convenor, Bernadette Scalora.
The group hopes to use this group as an educational tool in offering knowledge about how services such as housing, transport and health fit with the NDIS.
“With the NDIS coming, groups like these will become more important,” said group member, Mark Warren.
The next meeting of the Fitzgibbon Local Support Group will be held at the Fitzgibbon Community Centre on 12 July starting at 12: 30pm. Please let QDN know if you can attend by Monday 10 July by email: email@example.com or on 1300 363 783.
