READY, SET, GO: 'READY READERS' URGED TO REGISTER ONLINE TODAY

The time to become a volunteer 'Ready Reader' is now with Premier Anna Bligh and Education and Training Minister Geoff Wilson taking the first official registration in the volunteer army today.

"Today we kick start our campaign to boost the literacy skills of Queensland students, and begin recruiting an army of 3000 volunteers to read with children in our schools," Ms Bligh said.

"The Queensland Ready Readers program which the Minister and I launched earlier this month as part of the education green paper A Flying Start for Queensland Children, is based on national and international research that shows that well-trained and supported community volunteers can make a big difference to children's learning.”

Stirling Hinchliffe MP agrees that this is an important opportunity for people to contribute to our children's education and support the good work being done by teachers in our schools right across the state.

"Reading fuels young imaginations and it can help a child's listening and language skills, promotes attention and curiosity, and can put them on the right track for a great start to their education,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

"The extra one-on-one time can be invaluable to all children, but can bring particular benefits to children struggling with their early reading skills.

"From today people can register to become a Queensland Ready Reader on the Volunteering Queensland website at www.volqld.org.au.”

The program will be rolled out statewide in 2011.
